The Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, celebrated Hindi Diwas with discussions on Hindi’s role in administration, education, research, knowledge creation and contemporary intellectual discourse.
Shimla: The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, organised a programme on Monday to mark Hindi Diwas, with speakers emphasising the need to make Hindi a language of daily official work as well as knowledge creation, research and intellectual discourse.
The programme opened with a Saraswati Vandana presented by Dr Anuradha Raturi, Fellow. This was followed by the reading of a Hindi Diwas message from Union Minister for Education, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi. In his message, Joshi described Hindi as an important expression of India’s cultural heritage, national identity and democratic values. He stressed the importance of using simple, सहज and effective Hindi in everyday work and underlined the role of Hindi and other Indian languages in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat–2047.
As an institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, IIAS is also participating in Hindi Diwas celebrations and the 6th All India Hindi Conference being organised in Navi Mumbai. The Institute said its participation reflects its engagement with national initiatives aimed at promoting the wider use of Hindi and strengthening the implementation of the Official Language policy.
During the programme, representatives from different sections of the Institute shared their views on various aspects of Hindi. Library Attendant Deepak Sharma and Office Assistant Surendra Ramola discussed the practical and institutional use of Hindi. Fellows Dr Tahseen Mazhar, Dr Sumeshtha, Associate Fellow Dr Kumar Varun and National Fellow Professor Sachchidananda Mohanty spoke about the role of Hindi in knowledge, education and contemporary intellectual contexts.
In his presidential address, Professor Sanjay Bhatt, Fellow, emphasised the wider intellectual and social significance of Hindi. He said language should not be viewed merely as a medium of communication but also as a foundation for knowledge, thought and intellectual discourse.
The programme highlighted that the significance of Hindi Diwas goes beyond formal celebrations and lies in making Hindi easier and more effective to use in official work, research, education and knowledge exchange. Speakers also discussed the emerging possibilities of Hindi in the era of digital technology and a rapidly changing knowledge landscape.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Meenu Agrawal, Resident Medical Officer. Dr Akhilesh Pathak, Secretary, Official Language, moderated the programme.
