Hasi Rani Rath, mother of slain aide Chandranath Rath, will contest the Nandigram Assembly by-election for the BJP on October 6, with Suvendu Adhikari backing her candidacy.

Hasi Rani Rath, the mother of Chandranath Rath, the slain personal aide of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, will contest the upcoming Nandigram Assembly by-election as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. The bypoll is scheduled to be held on October 6, and Rath is expected to file her nomination papers at the Haldia Sub-Divisional Officer’s office on Tuesday afternoon in the presence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Despite the grief of losing her son, Hasi Rani Rath has expressed happiness at being chosen by the party to contest the election. After receiving the news on Tuesday morning, she offered prayers at the Janakinath Temple in Reyapara. Speaking with confidence, she said that the party had placed its trust in her and that the organisation stood firmly by her. She also expressed confidence that she would emerge victorious in the election.
Suvendu Adhikari, who won both the Nandigram and Bhabanipur Assembly seats in the 2026 elections, retained Bhabanipur and vacated Nandigram. In the previous Assembly election, Adhikari had defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram, subsequently becoming the Leader of the Opposition. Although he gave up his established political stronghold in 2026, there had been considerable speculation that the BJP would field a close associate to retain the seat.
Several names had been discussed as possible candidates, including BJP leaders Meghnad Pal and Anjan Pal, who are considered close to Adhikari. However, Hasi Rani Rath had emerged as the strongest contender. She had earlier indicated that she would be willing to contest if Suvendu Adhikari, whom she regards as the guardian of her family, wanted her to enter the electoral fray.
