New Delhi: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Hemant Soren took oath as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand last Thursday. He will seek a trust vote in the Assembly on 8 June. A decision in this regard was taken in the meeting of the state cabinet on Saturday. Soren was arrested last January in connection with the land corruption case. He returned to power after being released on bail after five months in jail. He resigned as Chief Minister before his arrest. The JMM council elected his wife Champai Soren as its leader at that time and she became the Chief Minister. After Hemant Soren was granted bail, Champai resigned as Chief Minister.

The JMM-led ruling coalition could easily win the trust vote. They currently have 45 MLAs in the 81-member assembly – JMM 27, Congress 17 and RJD 1. The opposition party led by BJP has 30 members. Soren may expand his cabinet only after the trust vote, sources said. However, neither the JMM nor the alliance leaders have officially commented on the expansion of Soren's cabinet.

Soren became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the first time in 2013. But he was in power for only one year and five months due to BJP taking power. After the assembly elections in December 2019, with the support of his allies Congress and RJD, he returned to the post of Chief Minister.
