Capital Expenditure: Rs 56,415 crore allocated to 16 states by the Centre

New Delhi: The Department of Expenditure of the Union Finance Ministry has approved the capital investment proposals of 16 states worth Rs 56,415 crore in the current financial year. This sanction has been given under the scheme 'Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2023-24'. The Centre has approved the grant of interest-free and long-term capital expenditure loans, cumulatively worth Rs 56,415 crore, to 16 states in fiscal year 2023-24 so far, an official release stated on Monday.

Rs. 7,523 crore has been allocated for West Bengal. This amount has been allocated for capital investment projects in various sectors including health, education, irrigation, water supply, electricity, roads, bridges, railways. This money is distributed among the states in proportion to their share of central taxes as directed by the Fifteenth Finance Commission. In the last financial year too, the finance ministry had similarly allocated funds to states for capital sector expenditure. But most of the states could not spend all of it, the survey revealed. It was not possible to spend the money of this project due to the violation of conditions and regulations.

The central government has been withholding the money due to Bengal in various projects for a long time. The state government has repeatedly demanded from the Center that the center settles Bengal's dues from one hundred days of work to the housing scheme. The Trinamool Congress, the ruling party of the state, has repeatedly mentioned the inconvenience of the common people due to the central withholding of money. But the central government did not heed it.
