Online banking is a hugely growing channel for day-to-day banking needs today. It can be simply called fair, convenient and fast replacement of traditional banking system. These days bill payment, fund transfer, online shopping, etc. can be done just by logging into a mobile app or bank portal. However, all advantages also have some disadvantages.

In this context, when we talk about the disadvantages of online banking, we are referring to various types of attacks or highly sophisticated frauds through which a customer is robbed of his customer ID, PIN, password, OTP, account number, personal information (which can be misused at the security verification level). It is precisely for this reason that it is necessary to ensure that such fraud does not occur. This is where secure banking comes in. But obviously it's a two-way street. While we as a bank take the utmost precautions possible, being safe also requires discretion on the part of the customer. Everyone should be aware of safe and sound banking practices and develop good habits.

Following are some of these good practices:

A. Activate banking alert on your phone.
B. Keep your phone number updated with the bank.
C. Inform your bank in case of any incident like mobile number change or SIM deactivation without your knowledge.
D. Download the bank's mobile app from Google Play Store or Apple iStore only.
E. Password-Protect your mobile phone. Use strong passwords and passphrases for your netbanking accounts.
F. Never share your important information like password, passphrase, PIN, OTP, CVV, credit card number, expiry date with anyone.
G. Report lost or stolen phone to your service provider or law enforcement agency immediately.
H. Don't click on any suspicious link in email or SMS to access net banking. Type the URL in a new browser window or visit the bank's website (eg www.hdfcbank.com)
I. Check if the URL of the website has https:// or a locked padlock at the beginning.
J. Never use auto-complete feature on banking sites or. Do not select the 'Remember Password' option.
Keep your mobile phone and computer updated with antivirus, scan your devices regularly.
K. Do not use public WiFi to access your banking session. Like restaurants, cafes, airports etc.
L. Always log-off after completing your online banking session. Close the browser window.
M. Beware of phishing (spam emails) and vishing (spam calls) asking for your confidential information.
N. Don't click or reply to any random link sent through SMS.
O. Don't keep transactional SMS after the need is over.
