New Delhi: Now tickets bought at the railway counter can be cancelled online. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Parliament on Friday. He said that tickets bought from the ticket counter can be cancelled online through the IRCTC website or inquiry number 139. However, to get the money back, one has to go to the railway reservation center.

Incidentally, BJP MP Medha Vishnu Kulkarni had raised a question whether it is necessary to go to the station to cancel the ticket before the train leaves. In a written reply to this question in the Rajya Sabha, the Railway Minister said that if the waiting ticket taken from the PRS counter (Railway Reservation Center) is returned as per the time limit prescribed in the Railway Passengers (Cancellation and Refund of Tickets) Rules, 2015, the ticket will be cancelled at the reservation counter.

He further said, "However, under normal circumstances, as per the Railway Passenger (Cancellation of Tickets and Refund of Fare) Rules 2015, tickets can also be cancelled online through IRCTC website or 139 within the stipulated time frame and the ticket price can be obtained by submitting the ticket at the main PRS counter of the reservation counter."
