BPCL Backs India’s Football Fixtures Against Brazil and Uruguay, Says Sport Can Inspire and Unite

Kolkata: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a Fortune Global 500 company and a Maharatna public sector undertaking, has reiterated its commitment to Indian sport by supporting the Indian football team’s high-profile international fixtures against former FIFA World Cup champions Uruguay and Brazil in Kolkata.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Brazil fixture, BPCL Director (Marketing) Subhankar Sen said the matches represented more than just international sporting contests, offering an opportunity to inspire millions of young Indians to engage with sport and aspire to higher levels of achievement.

“BPCL is proud to support the Indian football team as it takes on two of the most celebrated names in world football, Uruguay and Brazil. These matches represent more than just exciting sporting encounters; they are an opportunity to inspire millions of young Indians to dream bigger and engage with sport,” Sen said.

He added that BPCL believes sport can bring people together, motivate young talent and create avenues for excellence. According to him, the company’s association with the fixtures reflects its continued commitment to Indian sport and athletes.

Brazil defeated India 4-0 at Salt Lake Stadium after the Indian side held its own during the opening 27 minutes. The Blue Tigers had entered the contest with confidence after securing a 1-1 draw against 44th-ranked Panama. Brazil, ranked fifth in the world, gradually asserted its superiority and eventually secured a comfortable victory through its attacking strength and quality.

The India-Uruguay and India-Brazil fixtures have brought two of international football’s most recognised teams to India, giving domestic fans an opportunity to watch the national side compete against established footballing nations. The encounters are also expected to provide greater exposure to Indian football and contribute to the sport’s growing popularity in the country.

BPCL has maintained a long-standing association with Indian sport across multiple disciplines. The company is currently supporting Team India as its Principal Partner at the 20th Asian Games and was also a Principal Sponsor of the Commonwealth Games 2026.

As part of its wider efforts to identify and nurture sporting talent, BPCL launched the BPCL Sports Scholarship Initiative last year. The programme is aimed at providing financial assistance to promising young athletes across India, enabling them to concentrate on training and competitive opportunities at national and international levels.

Over the years, BPCL has supported a number of Indian sporting champions across disciplines. Its associations have included badminton players Saina Nehwal and R.M.V. Guru Sai Dutt; table tennis players Soumyajit Ghosh and Sanil Shetty; archers Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari; cricketers Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer and Kuldeep Yadav; hockey players S.V. Sunil, Harmanpreet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay and Varun Kumar; volleyball player Jerome Vinith; kabaddi players Rishank Devadiga and Vishal Mane; chess players Vaibhav Suri and Abhijeet Gupta; snooker players Manan Chandra and Shahbaaz Adil Khan; and para-badminton players Manasi Joshi and Manoj Sarkar.

Through its continued support for athletes, teams and major sporting events, BPCL said it remains committed to contributing to India’s sporting ecosystem and creating platforms that can encourage the next generation of athletes.

The India-Uruguay and India-Brazil fixtures mark another addition to BPCL’s sporting associations, combining the appeal of international football with the company’s broader efforts to promote sporting excellence in India.
