West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari proposed a new petrochemical project to Indian Oil during a curtain-raiser for India Energy Week 2027 in Kolkata.
Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has proposed setting up another petrochemical project in the state in the presence of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, assuring that land would not be a constraint for the proposed investment. The proposal was made during a curtain-raiser event for India Energy Week 2027 in Kolkata on Monday, where the Chief Minister urged Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to consider setting up the project in West Bengal. He also requested the Union minister to approve the proposal once it is placed before the company’s board, following which Puri gave an immediate positive response.
The Chief Minister also discussed the proposed expansion of the Haldia refinery and petrochemical complex. According to the state government, around 175 acres of land will be required for the expansion, while 85 acres have so far been made available. Adhikari said he would hold discussions with the Port Trust and Indian Oil regarding the remaining land requirement. The proposed expansion is being viewed as an important step towards strengthening West Bengal’s petrochemical and energy infrastructure.
During the press conference following the curtain-raiser programme, Adhikari also highlighted several major infrastructure and energy-related projects in the state, including the oil extraction project at Ashoknagar, expansion of the Haldia refinery and a mangrove plantation initiative in the Sundarbans. The Chief Minister expressed hope that these projects would attract significant international investment in West Bengal’s energy sector and create employment opportunities.
India Energy Week is one of the country’s major international exhibitions and conferences focused on energy and fuels. The event has previously been organised in Bengaluru, Goa and Delhi. The fifth edition of India Energy Week is scheduled to be held in West Bengal from January 28 to 31, 2027, with Kolkata hosting the international energy gathering for the first time.
The state government has projected the event as an opportunity to showcase West Bengal’s industrial and energy potential before global investors and industry representatives. Besides Hardeep Singh Puri and Suvendu Adhikari, Monday’s curtain-raiser programme was attended by state Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta, Industries Minister Tapas Roy and representatives of various petroleum and energy companies.
