Amazon’s growing sales of IT, packaging and industrial products in West Bengal, along with a ₹4,600 crore investment plan, point to rising business activity and employment opportunities across the state.
Kolkata : Industrial activity appears to be gaining momentum in West Bengal, with Amazon’s business sales data offering an indication of growing demand for products linked to information technology, packaging and industrial operations. Mitranjan Bhadhuri, Director of Amazon Business, said that business buyers in West Bengal have purchased significant quantities of IT and packaging-related products from Amazon in recent months, along with a substantial volume of equipment used in industrial establishments. According to him, the nature of these purchases reflects the growing entrepreneurial and business activity in the state.
Amazon is also planning to invest around Rs 4,600 crore in West Bengal, with a particular focus on strengthening its operations infrastructure. The investment is expected to create demand for manpower across different parts of the company’s operations. According to Amazon Business, the company has around one million products that can reach customers within a few hours of placing an order, while nearly four million products can be delivered within 24 hours. Maintaining and expanding such a delivery network requires a large workforce, including delivery personnel as well as skilled employees at fulfilment centres.
The expansion of Amazon’s operational infrastructure could therefore generate employment opportunities across the state, particularly in logistics, warehousing, fulfilment and last-mile delivery. The growing volume of online commerce is also creating opportunities for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs who are using Amazon to sell products manufactured in West Bengal to customers across the country.
Amazon currently offers around 190 million products through its platform and has around two million sellers using the marketplace to sell their products. The platform is increasingly providing small and medium-sized businesses with access to customers beyond their immediate geographical markets. This is particularly significant for manufacturers and entrepreneurs operating from rural and semi-urban parts of West Bengal, whose products can now reach buyers in different parts of India through online commerce.
Bhadhuri highlighted the example of a small entrepreneur from West Bengal who manufactures leather products. According to him, the entrepreneur gained visibility among large corporate organisations through Amazon, and products made by the business are now being purchased by major corporate offices for distribution as gifts to their employees. The example illustrates how digital marketplaces can connect small producers with larger institutional and corporate buyers.
A significant proportion of Amazon sellers from West Bengal also come from smaller cities and towns. According to the company, around 65 per cent of West Bengal-based businesses selling their products through Amazon are from Tier-II and Tier-III cities. This suggests that e-commerce is not limited to Kolkata and other major urban centres, but is also becoming an important sales channel for entrepreneurs operating in smaller towns.
Consumer demand in West Bengal has also increased over the past few years. Amazon’s sales in the state have grown by around 40 per cent over the last five years, according to the company. The growth has not been restricted to Kolkata, with customers from several smaller districts contributing significantly to the company’s business. Apart from Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Bardhaman and East Midnapore have emerged among the leading districts in terms of Amazon sales in West Bengal.
The trend comes ahead of the festive season, when consumer spending traditionally receives a boost in West Bengal. Amazon has announced special offers for customers during the festive period, with discounts available across a range of products. With industrial and business-related purchases increasing alongside consumer demand, the company’s expansion in the state is expected to strengthen both its logistics network and the wider ecosystem of sellers and small businesses operating through its platform.
The combination of rising e-commerce sales, increasing participation of businesses from smaller towns and Amazon’s planned investment in operational infrastructure points to a growing role for digital commerce in West Bengal’s business landscape. For small manufacturers and entrepreneurs, particularly those located outside major cities, the online marketplace is emerging as an additional route to access customers and corporate buyers across India.
