Suvendu Adhikari’s BJP government in West Bengal begins its journey with five ministers, including Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul and Nisith Pramanik, taking oath at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground.
Kolkata : Suvendu Adhikari has taken oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal’s first-ever BJP government. In the first phase of the new cabinet under his leadership, five ministers have so far been sworn in. At the grand ceremony held at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday, BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik, Khudiram Tudu and Ashok Kirtaniya took oath as ministers in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several other senior leaders.
Among the most prominent faces in the new cabinet is Dilip Ghosh, the former West Bengal BJP president who played a major role in strengthening the party’s grassroots organisation in the state. A former full-time RSS pracharak, Ghosh later entered active politics and emerged as one of the BJP’s key leaders in Bengal. He served as an MLA from Kharagpur and later became a Member of Parliament from Medinipur. His contribution to expanding the BJP’s political base in West Bengal has been widely acknowledged within the party.
Agnimitra Paul, the only woman minister in the cabinet so far, also took oath on Saturday. A fashion designer by profession, she joined the BJP in 2019 and quickly rose within the party ranks. She was appointed president of the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal before later becoming the party’s state general secretary and, earlier this year, one of its vice-presidents. Paul first won the Asansol South Assembly seat in 2021 and retained the constituency in the recently concluded elections. However, she faced defeats in the 2022 Asansol Lok Sabha bypoll and the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
BJP MLA from Ranibandh in Bankura district, Khudiram Tudu, also joined the ministry. A school teacher by profession, Tudu took his oath in Santali. In the recently concluded Assembly election, he defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Tanushree Hansda. He had earlier contested from the Ranibandh constituency on two occasions as well.
Nisith Pramanik, another prominent BJP leader, was sworn in as minister after winning from the Mathabhanga constituency. Governor RN Ravi administered the oath to him in Bengali. Pramanik is considered one of the prominent young faces of the BJP and is already a well-known figure in national politics.
Ashok Kirtaniya, the BJP MLA from Bangaon North Assembly constituency, also took oath as minister. Like several others in the cabinet, he took the oath in Bengali and pledged to work towards fulfilling his new responsibilities.
With Suvendu Adhikari leading the BJP’s first government in West Bengal, political observers are now closely watching the functioning of the new cabinet and the administrative direction the government will take in the coming days.
