Suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir lays the foundation stone for a Babri-style mosque in Murshidabad’s Rejinagar–Beldanga amid unprecedented security.
Beldanga: Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a mosque—designed in the style of the Babri Masjid—at Rejinagar–Beldanga in Murshidabad. Before a crowd of several thousand, Kabir ascended the ceremonial platform in the morning, cut the ribbon and formally inaugurated the construction. The area reverberated with chants of 'Nara-e-Takbeer, Allahu Akbar'as he announced the beginning of the project.
The entire region was placed under an extensive security blanket. From Rejinagar to Beldanga, district police, RAF units and central security forces were deployed in large numbers. Anticipating tensions surrounding the event, the administration had implemented stringent preventive measures. Yet, the turnout was overwhelming, with local residents and volunteers gathering from early morning. Kabir claimed the 25-bigha site could hold as many as 300,000 people.
Speaking to journalists before the ceremony, Kabir said, “The foundation stone will be laid today in accordance with the High Court’s directive. No force can stop this.” He alleged conspiracies to disrupt the programme and provoke unrest, but asserted that “lakhs of people from South Bengal will defeat these attempts.” Kabir added that the mosque was being built under the constitutionally guaranteed right to worship. He also announced plans for a hospital, educational institutions and a guest house on the premises.
Kabir sharply criticised the Trinamool Congress as well, accusing the party of “polarising people on religious lines just like the BJP.” He described the developments as part of a “political conspiracy.”
More than 3,000 volunteers were stationed to manage the massive gathering. Food arrangements were lavish: seven catering companies served shahi biryani, with meals prepared for about 40,000 attendees and another 20,000 packets reserved for locals. Organisers estimated that food expenses alone exceeded ₹30 lakh, while the total cost of the event could reach ₹60–70 lakh. The 150-foot-long, 80-foot-wide stage itself reportedly cost around ₹10 lakh to construct.
Kabir said the programme began at 10 a.m. with a recitation from the Quran and the foundation stone ceremony was completed by noon. In line with police instructions, the ground would be vacated by 4 p.m. He acknowledged the security concerns but insisted, “This is a historic moment for the region. People will come, no matter what.”
Meanwhile, the administration’s main worry was keeping traffic on National Highway 12 moving smoothly. Alternative routes were prepared in case of congestion. Still, Kabir remained confident that neither political pressure nor heavy security measures would dampen public enthusiasm.
