Panaji : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on fRIday unveiled a 77-foot bronze statue of Lord Ram at the Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt in Partagali, South Goa—marking the installation of the tallest Ram statue in the world. The statue, crafted by renowned sculptor Ram Sutar, who also designed Gujarat’s Statue of Unity, has been positioned as a monumental symbol of faith and heritage within one of India’s oldest monastic institutions.

The unveiling comes as part of a 10-day celebration commemorating 550 years of the mutt’s spiritual and cultural tradition. The historic mutt premises, built in Partagal village in Canacona 370 years ago, hold significant importance for the Saraswat community. Organisers expect between 7,000 and 10,000 devotees and visitors to converge on the mutt daily during the festivities, which began on November 27 and will continue until December 7.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi also offered prayers at the temple within the mutt complex and interacted with the monks and devotees present. Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister held a roadshow in Udupi, Karnataka, after addressing the Laksha Kantha Gita Parayana programme at the Sri Krishna Matha—an event that saw over one lakh devotees reciting shlokas from the Bhagavad Gita in unison.

In Udupi, PM Modi inaugurated the Suvarna Teertha Mantapa in front of the Krishna sanctum and dedicated the Kanaka Kavacha, a golden cover for the revered Kanakana Kindi—a sacred window associated with the saint Kanakadasa’s divine vision of Lord Krishna. He reflected on the region’s rich political and spiritual legacy, highlighting the work of Jana Sangh leader VS Acharya and crediting Udupi for pioneering a model of good governance as early as the late 1960s.

Calling Udupi his “karmabhoomi,” PM Modi said the city had embraced practices like cleanliness drives and modern water supply systems decades before they became national priorities. He added that the recitation of the Gita by one lakh people had showcased India’s spiritual strength to the world.

With the unveiling of the towering Lord Ram statue in Goa and his extensive engagements in Udupi, the Prime Minister’s visit underscored a renewed emphasis on cultural heritage, spiritual traditions, and the historic institutions that continue to shape India’s social fabric.
