West Bengal’s Haringhata brand launches chilled, ready-to-cook packaged fish alongside its popular meat and egg products, aiming for 100 stalls before Durga Puja.
Kolkata: Expanding its footprint beyond mutton, chicken, and eggs, the West Bengal Animal Resources Development Department has launched a new initiative to sell packaged fresh fish under the brand name 'Haringhata Fish'. The move adds another offering to the existing 'Haringhata Meat' stalls, which will now stock packets of 'rui' (rohu), 'katla', 'bata', and 'mrigel' fish in 250-gram and 500-gram packs.
Unlike frozen products, the fish will be chilled and preserved to maintain freshness. Each pack will have a shelf life of 12 days, although officials said they will ensure the fish is sold within seven days. The West Bengal Livestock Development Corporation inaugurated the project on Wednesday, highlighting in a press release that the fish will be delivered through Haringhata’s well-planned cold chain infrastructure to guarantee freshness, superior taste, and hygiene.
The corporation assured stringent quality checks to detect harmful chemicals and ensure the products are antibiotic-free before reaching customers. The fish will be cleaned, descaled, and gutted before being hygienically packed, requiring only cooking after purchase. Sourced from fish farms in Galsi, the packets will be transported to Kolkata in Haringhata’s own temperature-controlled vehicles. Initially, sales will be restricted to Kolkata and nearby areas through Haringhata Meat outlets, with plans to expand to 100 stalls before Durga Puja. If successful, the project will be extended to districts.
Alongside the fish launch, the department also introduced 'Haringhata Gold Premier Eggs', a nutrient-rich yellow-yolk egg variety available in packs of six and thirty. The move comes after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the department to scale up egg production to reduce dependence on imports from other states. Officials noted that Haringhata’s initiatives have already boosted meat demand domestically and even enabled exports, while egg production has reached self-sufficiency levels.
The introduction of the Haringhata Fish brand aims to offer consumers fresh, safe, and ready-to-cook fish, further cementing the brand’s reputation as a trusted source for quality non-vegetarian products in West Bengal.
