Wholesale price inflation rises to 3.36% in June

According to the report released by the Centre, mainly food prices have gone up, which has had an impact on the wholesale price hike.

New Delhi: The central government has released the wholesale inflation report for June on Monday (15 July 2024). The data showed that the wholesale price inflation (WPI) stood at 3.36 percent in June. It was at 2.61 percent in the previous month, May 2024. The main reasons behind the increase in inflation rate in June were the increase of food price and primary goods price. The inflation rate of manufactured goods, which was below one percent, has now reached almost one and a half percent. This is the highest in the last 16 months.

According to the report released by the Centre, mainly food prices have gone up, which has had an impact on the wholesale price hike. Food inflation rose to 8.68 percent in June from 7.40 percent in May. Besides, the primary goods inflation rate rose to 8.80 percent in June, as against 7.20 percent in the previous month. These include food, mineral and vegetable prices. Onions have become very expensive in the last month, due to which wholesale onion inflation rose to 93.35 percent in June. In May it was also above 50 percent and was 58.05 percent. Prices of food items such as eggs, meat and fish fell to below zero in June. Inflation for eggs, meat and fish was -2.19 percent in June. It was 1.58 percent in May. Pulses inflation eased to 2.41 percent in June from 2.67 percent in the previous month.

However, the wholesale inflation rate of fuel and electricity eased slightly and stood at 1.03 percent in June. This inflation rate was 1.35 percent in May. Inflation in manufacturing also picked up and stood at 1.43 percent in June. Last May, it was 0.78 percent. Wholesale prices of manufactured goods – such as cars, leather, biscuits have increased.
