ew Delhi : A PAN (Permanent Account Number) card is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identification number issued by the Income Tax Department of India. It is used for various financial transactions such as: Filing income tax returns: PAN is mandatory for filing income tax returns, opening a bank account: PAN is required for opening a bank account, either savings or fixed deposit, buying or selling property: PAN is required for any real estate transaction, Making financial investments: PAN is required for buying shares, mutual funds, bonds, etc., applying for a loan: PAN is required for applying for a loan from a bank or financial institution, transactions above a certain threshold: PAN is mandatory for any financial transaction above a certain threshold limit set by the government, TDS deduction: PAN is mandatory for deductor to quote while making TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and TCS (Tax Collected at Source) deductions, PAN is also used as a valid identification proof for various government and non-government services and transactions. PAN is mandatory for Indian citizens and entities.

The Finance Act of 2017 introduced Section 139AA to the Income Tax Act of 1961, mandating that individuals eligible for an Aadhaar must provide their Aadhaar number when applying for a PAN or filing an income tax return, effective from July 1, 2017. This requirement ensures the authenticity of the PAN and reduces the likelihood of individuals having multiple PANs.

Check PAN-Aadhaar card link status: Steps to check without logging into the Income tax portal

Visit Income Tax e-filing portal.

Find the 'Quick Links' section and select 'Link Aadhaar Status'.

Input your 'PAN number' and 'Aadhaar Number', and then click the 'View Link Aadhaar Status' button.

Upon successful validation, you will receive a message indicating the status of your Aadhaar-PAN linking.

If your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN card, you will see: "Your PAN is already linked to the given Aadhaar."

If the Aadhaar-PAN linking is in progress, the message will say: "Your Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for validation. Please check the status later by clicking on ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ link on the Home Page." Otherwise, the message will indicate: "PAN not linked with Aadhaar. Please click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ to link your Aadhaar with PAN."

You can do it by logging into the Income Tax portal :

Sign in to the Income Tax e-filing portal.

Navigate to the ‘Dashboard’ on the homepage and select the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ option.

Alternatively, you can go to ‘My Profile’ and click on the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ option.

If your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN card, your Aadhaar number will be visible. Otherwise, you will see the message 'Link Aadhaar Status'. If your request to link Aadhaar with your PAN card is pending with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for validation, you will need to check the status later.

To check the status of your PAN-Aadhaar linking, visit https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/link-aadhaar-status. Just enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers, then click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’. The status of your PAN-Aadhaar linking will be displayed on the screen.

Through SMS

Compose an SMS in the following format: UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar number> <10-digit PAN number>.

Send the SMS to either ‘567678’ or ‘56161’.

Wait for a response.

If your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN, you will receive the following message: "Aadhaar is already associated with PAN (number) in ITD database. Thank you for using our services." Otherwise, you will receive a message stating: "Aadhaar is not associated with PAN (number) in ITD database. Thank you for using our services."
