The Ministry of Railways has announced that regional railways will be empowered to introduce concessional fares on trains equipped with AC compartments.
Indian Railways has taken significant measures to enhance facilities in improved trains, including air-conditioned (AC) coaches. However, despite the presence of premium trains on various routes, passenger numbers remain low. To address this issue, Railways has decided to reduce the price of Executive Class tickets by up to 25% on routes that experience limited passenger traffic, even though they feature state-of-the-art trains with AC chair cars.
The Ministry of Railways has announced that regional railways will be empowered to introduce concessional fares on trains equipped with AC compartments. The objective is to improve the train travel experience and make it more accessible. Through a statement, the government shared, "The Ministry of Railways has decided to offer this concession, subject to certain conditions, with the aim of improving the service of train travel and making it more accessible. Regional Railways have been given the authority to introduce this new scheme of concessional fares."
According to the Railway Board's order, this new scheme will apply to all executive classes of trains featuring AC seating, including coaches like 'Anubhuti' and 'Vistadome,' in addition to AC chair cars. The discount will be applicable to the original fare of the train, with the passengers potentially receiving up to a 25% discount. Other charges such as Reservation Charge, Super Fast Surcharge, and GST will be levied separately.
The directive further states that the offer will be considered for trains that have recorded less than 50% passenger occupancy in the last 30 days. However, the number of passengers will be calculated on a train-by-train basis, either from the end to the start or based solely on the number of passengers in the compartment for which the discount will be provided.
While this new discount scheme will be implemented soon, passengers who have already booked tickets will not be eligible for refunds or additional benefits. Furthermore, the scheme will not be applicable to special trains operated during holidays or festivals.
The introduction of concessional fares on AC trains with low passenger traffic aims to attract more travelers and optimize the utilization of these advanced train services, ultimately enhancing the overall railway experience for passengers.
