New York: A 49-year-old man of Indian origin was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for smuggling more than 800 Indian citizens to America using ride-hailing app Uber. Rajinder Pal Singh, alias Jaspal Gill, confessed to the charges against him in February. Jaspal told the court that he had brought hundreds of Indians from Canada to America in the last few years. For this he took at least $5 lakh as pawn of the human smuggling ring. Then on Tuesday, Yashpal, a resident of California, was sentenced to 45 months in prison.

According to US court sources, Yashpal arranged to smuggle more than 800 Indians across the northern border to America and Washington in four years. Beginning in July 2018, Yashpal and his co-conspirators used Uber to transport people crossing the border illegally from Canada to the Seattle area.

The investigation found that between July 2018 and April 2000, seventeen Uber accounts linked to the smuggling ring were charged more than $80,000. The members of smuggling gangs use sophisticated means to launder money. Investigators also found around $45,000 in cash and fake identity documents from Yashpal's home in California. It is known that those intruders who entered America illegally will be deported from the country.
