Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut compared the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute to the Russia-Ukraine war.
MUMBAI: The political heat is on the rise over the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute. Incidentally, both the states are ruled by BJP. On the one hand, the opposition Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray attacked the Narendra Modi government at the center on Sunday over this border dispute, on the other hand, the state's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the state government will bring a proposal on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border issue in the winter session of the Legislative Assembly.
Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut compared the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute to the Russia-Ukraine war in an editorial in Shiv Sena's party mouthpiece Samna. He said that the central government has been ignoring the aspirations of the people of Belagavi region of Karnataka for a long time. The people of this region have been demanding the inclusion of the area from Karnataka to Maharashtra for the past seven decades. The Center continues to ignore their long-standing demand. They are being deprived." "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is willing to mediate on Russia-Ukraine conflict but not on domestic issues," Raut wrote in his weekly column 'Rokhthok' in the party mouthpiece. He also said, these are "not signs of a good leader". The border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka was a fight of humanity, and not a fight between the people and governments of the two states.
On the other hand, on the same day, Raut told an all-India media, “The Center is worrying about Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Because that is what the people there want, but the people of Belagavi have been demanding their inclusion in Maharashtra for 70 years. People of Belagavi want to be part of Maharashtra. If the issue of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir is the benchmark of people's will, it should be applied to Belagavi as well.” He also attacked Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. His comments come at a time when there is an atmosphere of unrest in the state's Marathi-speaking areas, including Belagavi, following fresh demands by Maharashtra. "If the will of the people is standard, it should also apply to Belagavi," Raut said.
Today, the winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly begins in Nagpur from Monday. Earlier on the day, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “We will pass a resolution regarding the Karnataka-Maharashtra border in the winter session of the state assembly. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will present the proposal in the Assembly.” He also targeted the opposition parties in the state and said, “Congress and NCP are responsible for this problem. Congress has created this problem.”
