After announcing Suvendu Adhikari as West Bengal’s next Chief Minister, Amit Shah thanked voters for BJP’s historic victory and warned party leaders not to betray the trust placed in them by the people of Bengal.
Kolkata : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday combined celebration with a stern message of responsibility while announcing Suvendu Adhikari as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. Addressing BJP legislators after the party’s historic Assembly election victory, Shah thanked the people of Bengal for placing their trust in the BJP but cautioned party leaders that the mandate must not be betrayed under any circumstances.
Speaking at the BJP legislature party meeting held at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town, Amit Shah said the people of West Bengal had voted for the BJP despite what he described as an atmosphere of fear and intimidation under the rule of Mamata Banerjee. He said the massive public mandate had created a huge responsibility for the BJP leadership and elected representatives.
Shah expressed gratitude to the people of Bengal for giving the BJP a decisive mandate and urged the party’s legislators to work with complete dedication to fulfil public expectations. He warned that the BJP must never create a situation where the trust of the people gets shattered. According to Shah, the party must give its absolute best for the welfare and development of West Bengal.
The Union Home Minister sounded particularly enthusiastic while referring to Suvendu Adhikari’s victory over Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur. Shah said that after Mamata’s defeat in Nandigram in 2021, Trinamool Congress leaders had argued that Adhikari had won only because he contested from his home turf. However, Shah pointed out that Adhikari had now defeated Mamata Banerjee once again in Bhabanipur, considered one of her strongest political bastions. Thanking the voters of Bhabanipur, Shah said the result marked the beginning of a new political chapter in West Bengal.
While explaining the larger political significance of the BJP’s victory, Shah declared that the BJP government had now been established “from Gangotri to Gangasagar.” Referring to Syama Prasad Mukherjee, he said forming a BJP government in the birthplace of the Jana Sangh founder was a matter of immense pride for the party. Shah added that making the BJP politically dominant in West Bengal had long been one of the party’s major national goals. He further remarked that wherever Syama Prasad Mukherjee may be today, he would certainly be blessing the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Amit Shah also recalled the BJP’s gradual political rise in West Bengal over the last decade. He said the party’s journey in the state began with a by-election victory in 2014. In the 2016 Assembly election, the BJP had won only three seats. That number increased to 77 in 2021, and in the latest 2026 Assembly election the party secured a massive 207 seats to come to power in the state.
Highlighting the sacrifices made by BJP workers in Bengal, Shah claimed that 321 BJP workers had lost their lives in political violence in the state and said the party would never forget their sacrifice. He further alleged that apart from Kerala, no other state in the country had witnessed such intense political violence as West Bengal.
On the election results, Shah argued that the BJP’s victory was historic not only numerically but also in terms of popular support. He claimed that BJP candidates won with an average margin of nearly 28,000 votes and stated that the Trinamool Congress failed to win even a single seat in nine districts of the state. According to him, the verdict reflected an overwhelming mandate in favour of the BJP and against the Trinamool government.
The Union Home Minister also praised the role of the Election Commission of India during the Assembly polls. He said that despite repeated allegations against the Election Commission, the election witnessed a record voter turnout of 93 percent, which he described as the highest in West Bengal since Independence. Shah further claimed that there were no allegations of booth capturing, rigging or large-scale poll violence during the election process. Along with the Election Commission, he also congratulated the administration and police for conducting the polls peacefully.
During his speech, Shah sharply criticised the Indian National Congress, accusing the party of trying to discredit India’s electoral process to hide its repeated political failures. He said the Congress had failed to win major elections for years and questioned why the party had repeatedly failed to form governments across different states. According to Shah, introspection was now the Congress party’s biggest political necessity.
With Suvendu Adhikari officially chosen as the BJP legislature party leader and preparations underway for the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata, the BJP leadership is now attempting to project both confidence and accountability as it prepares to govern West Bengal for the first time.
