New Delhi : Search giant Google marked March 14 with a special doodle celebrating Pi Day 2026, paying tribute to the world’s most famous mathematical constant, π. The annual observance highlights the importance of the number in mathematics and science and is widely celebrated by enthusiasts through activities such as pi-reciting competitions and enjoying slices of pie.

In its description of the doodle, Google said the artwork celebrates the numerical constant pi while highlighting the early geometric methods used to calculate its limits. Pi is an irrational number, meaning its decimal representation never ends and never repeats. For most practical calculations, its value is approximated as 3.14, while another commonly used fractional approximation among students is 22/7.

The constant π represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. While the diameter is the straight-line distance across a circle passing through its centre, the circumference refers to the total distance around the circle. This relationship makes pi a fundamental concept in geometry and a crucial element in numerous mathematical and physical formulas.

The doodle also acknowledges the work of ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes, who made one of the earliest breakthroughs in estimating the value of pi. Long before modern computing tools existed, Archimedes developed an innovative geometric technique to approximate the number. He calculated the upper and lower bounds of pi by placing a circle between two 96-sided polygons, allowing him to derive increasingly accurate estimates of the constant.

Google has rolled out the special Pi Day doodle in several countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, India, Belgium, Czechia, Iceland, Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, Ecuador, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru.

A Google Doodle is a special illustration or animation displayed on the search engine’s homepage to commemorate significant events, holidays, and influential personalities. The concept dates back to 1998 when Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin created the first doodle to inform users that they were attending the Burning Man festival and were out of the office.

Over the years, Google’s doodles have evolved into a global creative tradition. In 2000, the company released its first international doodle to celebrate Bastille Day in France. A decade later, on May 21, 2010, Google introduced its first interactive game doodle to mark the 30th anniversary of the iconic video game Pac‑Man, marking a new milestone in the platform’s design and engagement with users.
