National Open Full Contact Karate Championship 2025 Kicks Off in Kolkata

Kolkata: The National Open Full Contact Karate Championship 2025 was inaugurated on Friday at the indoor auditorium of South City International School. The two-day national event opened in the presence of Katsunori Ashida, Deputy Consul General of Japan in Kolkata, who attended as the Chief Guest and formally declared the championship open. Sharing the stage with him was India’s iconic karate master, Hanshi Shivaji Ganguly, whose contributions to martial arts continue to inspire generations.

The inauguration ceremony also witnessed the launch of Avik Bhattacharya’s book, “The Living Legend of Indian Karate – The Life of Hanshi Shivaji Ganguly.” The biography traces the extraordinary journey of a young Kolkata athlete who moved from the football field to the rigorous world of Kyokushin Karate, training under the legendary Sosai Mas Oyama. The book captures the fearless trials of 20-man and 30-man kumite, his ascent to the Asian Championship podium, and the making of a true warrior who carried India’s pride into global arenas.

Author Avik Bhattacharya— a Learning & Development professional, Shotokan Black Belt, and Kyokushin practitioner— blends personal insight, martial arts philosophy, and an understanding of human psychology to bring Ganguly’s story to life. “Karate is not just combat; it is a path of discipline, courage, and human evolution,” he says.

A striking line from the book reads: “To fight is to live, and to live is to never give up.” It reflects the philosophy that shaped Shivaji Ganguly’s life, where rising after every fall became the essence of his journey.

The championship is organised by Shivaji Gaanguly’s Academy Mind Body, and holds recognition from the Bengal Black Belt Karate Association (BBKA), All India Full Contact Karate Organisation (AIKFO), Kyokushinkai India, and the World Karate Council Mkyokushin.
