Kolkata : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a blistering attack on the opposition, particularly the Trinamool Congress (TMC), as he defended the controversial bills introduced in Parliament that seek to remove any prime minister, chief minister or minister who remains in jail for over 30 consecutive days. Speaking at a rally in Dum Dum after inaugurating multiple metro projects in Kolkata, Modi declared that “the insult to the Constitution will not be tolerated” and accused the TMC of opposing anti-corruption legislation only to protect tainted leaders.

Targeting TMC leaders Partha Chatterjee and Jyotipriyo Mallick, Modi said, “Even after being arrested in the teachers’ recruitment scam, a minister refused to resign. Another minister was jailed for ration corruption but clung to power. Do they care about people? They have deceived the public. Do such people deserve to hold office?” He went further, remarking that “in this country, even after landing in jail, some continue to function as chief minister. This dishonour of the Constitution will not be accepted. If a prime minister indulges in corruption, even his chair will not remain. Yet Trinamool opposes the law and resists it in Parliament.”

Switching focus to the issue of illegal migration, the Prime Minister made an emotive appeal, stating, “Should infiltrators not be driven out? Who will do it? Only BJP will do it. Give BJP your vote, and infiltrators will flee Bengal. They are stealing the jobs of our youth, encroaching on citizens’ rights, and dishonouring our mothers and sisters. Trinamool shelters them only for vote-bank politics.” He alleged that land scams were rampant under the TMC, with farmers’ and tribals’ lands being forcibly taken away.

Highlighting the BJP’s commitment to Bengali culture, Modi said, “It was the BJP government that gave Bengali the status of a classical language. Build a BJP government in Bengal, and we will fulfil Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s dream. A developed Bengal is Modi’s guarantee. The BJP has a roadmap for Bengal’s progress, but the TMC has none. TMC is the enemy of development.”

Modi claimed that under TMC’s rule, central projects had been deliberately stalled. “Look at Dum Dum. It could have benefitted immensely under the Smart City Mission, but the TMC government never joined. Their only job is to block central schemes in Bengal. Give us one chance here, and see the difference,” he urged the crowd.

Touching upon national security, the Prime Minister invoked the success of “Operation Sindoor,” praising the Indian armed forces: “Our soldiers taught the terrorists such a lesson that Pakistan has lost its sleep. Weapons made in India were used. Special respect to the soldiers from Bengal.”

He gave a call for political change in Bengal, asserting, “Together we must say: remove TMC, save Bengal. Real change will come only when TMC goes. Crime and corruption are the identity of this government. As long as TMC stays, development will remain frozen.”

Modi also accused the TMC of looting central funds. “The money we send for you is looted by TMC cadres. That is why West Bengal lags behind in welfare. Earlier Tripura and Assam were in the same state, but after BJP came to power, poor people there benefited directly from welfare schemes,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Modi inaugurated three new metro routes, including the much-awaited East-West Metro extension from Esplanade to Sealdah, and two other lines—Noapara to Airport and Hemanta Mukherjee to Beleghata—which will open to the public on August 25. Addressing the significance of these projects, Modi said, “World’s third-largest metro network is now in India. With today’s inauguration, Kolkata’s connectivity has transformed. Travel to the airport has become easier, commuting costs have fallen, and long hours of journey will now be completed in minutes.”

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for several projects worth over ₹5,200 crore, including the six-lane elevated Kona Expressway, aimed at easing congestion and improving regional connectivity.

As he concluded his speech in Dum Dum, Modi raised the slogan, “Bachte Chai, Tai BJP Chai” (We want to survive, so we want BJP), positioning the BJP as the only alternative to bring safety, development, and genuine change to West Bengal.
