Actor Sreelekha Mitra faces social boycott and online harassment after joining the 'Abhaya Mancha' protest on August 9. Banners urging her boycott appeared outside her Behala home, prompting her to file a police complaint.
Kolkata: Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra has alleged that she is being subjected to a social boycott and harassment after participating in a protest demanding justice for 'Abhaya'. Banners calling for her boycott appeared in Behala, including right outside her residence in Sodepur, Behala, on Thursday.
The actor claimed that she has also been targeted on social media since she joined the 'Abhaya Mancha' protest on August 9. Mitra has filed a complaint via email with Haridevpur Police Station regarding the incident.
Her participation in the August 9 demonstration coincided with the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' organised by the group, where she made strong remarks on political accountability in the case. Addressing reporters, Mitra said, “Ask the BJP what the CBI is doing. Ask Suvendu Adhikari what the CBI is doing—he went to Nabanna for the protest, so he should know. I believe there is a setting between Didi (Mamata Banerjee) and Modi. Politicians often make such arrangements for their own benefit, while people like us suffer. People like Abhaya in our homes die, and those who fight for justice often pay a heavy price—slowly being pushed towards their own death.”
She also questioned the role of the state’s Home Minister, Mamata Banerjee, stating, “If Mamata Banerjee, as the police minister, does nothing, what can you or I do? Why is the police doing nothing? Ask Mamata Banerjee. My back is against the wall now, and so is that of many others. When people are pushed to the wall, they react. If that’s the case, I will act too.”
Abhaya Mancha member Arya Banerjee had earlier outlined their protest calendar, which included uniting multiple organisations for events such as “CGO Abhiyan” on August 1, “Kalighat Cholo” on August 9, and a “Night Occupation” protest on August 14. However, the Kolkata Police denied permission for the “Kalighat Cholo” march on August 9. The group had sought permission to rally from Hazra to Harish Mukherjee Road, but the police cited the imposition of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) in the area, which prohibits rallies, meetings, protests, and gatherings that may cause serious law-and-order disruptions.
The police warned that if the programme was held without permission, legal action would follow. Now, all eyes are on whether the August 14 'Raat Dakhal' protest achieves its intended impact.
