New Delhi: Apple's largest contract manufacturer, Foxconn, has taken another step forward in India. It is going to set up a new factory in ESR Industrial Park in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu, near Chennai, where the metal case or enclosure of the iPhone will be manufactured.

Earlier, Tata Electronics was responsible for manufacturing this metal case in India. Foxconn is entering this field, which is part of Apple's 'chain diversification' strategy. Apart from Foxconn, Apple is also making display modules and AirPods in other parts of the country, which is strengthening India's electronics manufacturing infrastructure.

This move is not only seen as a supply infrastructure, but has many other strategic reasons. On one hand, there is American political pressure, they want everything to be made in America, on the other hand, India wants to increase its dependence on India and make India an important manufacturing hub on the global stage. Apple's top executives, including Tim Cook, had already said at a press conference that most of the iPhones sold in America in the next June-September quarter will be made in India.
