EPS-95 National Agitation Committee has demanded a minimum pension of Rs 7,500, the trade unions have proposed a minimum pension of Rs 5,000 per month.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the general budget for 2025-26 in Parliament on February 1. Before that, she is listening to speeches from all sectors. A delegation of EPS-95 pensioners met her on January 10. They demanded an increase in the minimum pension, as well as an increase in dearness allowance and free medical facilities for the pensioner and his wife/husband.
Meanwhile, while the EPS-95 National Agitation Committee has demanded a minimum pension of Rs 7,500, the trade unions have proposed a minimum pension of Rs 5,000 per month. This difference in the demands of the two sides has created a controversy. Pensioners say that the rate at which the market price has increased is insufficient to meet the basic needs of living. The committee said that even though the government announced a minimum pension of Rs 1,000 in 2014, more than 36.60 lakh pensioners still receive a pension lower than this. The report claims that Nirmala Sitharaman has assured the EPS-95 National Agitation Committee that the demands will be reviewed.
It is to be noted that EPF members contribute 12 percent of their basic salary to the Provident Fund, where employers also contribute an equal amount. The employer's contribution is divided into two parts. Of this, 8.33 percent is allocated to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), while the remaining 3.67 percent goes to the EPF scheme.
