New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the full budget in Parliament on July 23. Speculation about potential surprises in the budget began as soon as the budget session date was announced. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that the budget session will start on July 22, with the budget for the financial year 2024–25 presentation on July 23 in Lok Sabha. The session will run until August 12.

Political analysts believe that the Modi government may adopt a populist approach in this year's budget. Despite the BJP's return to power with its allies, they didn't achieve a full majority as anticipated, and the opposition is stronger than in the previous two terms. Additionally, assembly elections are scheduled this year in four states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Jharkhand, which are crucial for the BJP. The party's performance in states like Maharashtra and Haryana was worse than in the last Lok Sabha elections, boosting the opposition's morale. Moreover, the BJP couldn't field a candidate in Kashmir, putting them on the backfoot for the upcoming assembly elections. Consequently, the budget might focus on winning public support, especially in poll-bound states.

Meanwhile, the opposition is gearing up to pressure the government during the budget session. They are pushing for the appointment of an India Alliance member as the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien hinted at these demands on his X handle, emphasizing the need for weekly discussions on national issues in Parliament, prioritizing the Deputy Speaker's post, and allowing adequate time for bill passage without rushing.
