Recently, the Union Health Ministry has included them in Schedule H2 to make barcodes mandatory on top 300 brand medicines. The purpose behind this is to trace the source of these medicines through the manufacturing and supply chain and ensure authenticity. This rule will be applicable from August 1 next year.
According to a report, the initiative will be labeled as Aadhaar Card for Medicines. The sources further told media that this QR code will contain all the information of the medicine including the unique product identification code, generic name of the medicine, brand name, name and address of the manufacturer, batch number, date of manufacturing, expiry date and manufacturing license number
The central government wants to promote this initiative at chemist outlets across India along with two other schemes - Pharma Sahi Daam (to complain about high prices of medicines) and Pharmacovigilance (to report side effects of medicines). Government will bring awareness among consumers with these schemes.
Sources from the government said that we are going to implement the rule of mandatory posting of these hoardings and banners with details at all retail chemist outlets across India. 300 brands, including top-selling popular medicines in the Indian pharma market like Allegra, Dolo, Augmentin, Saridon, Calpol and Thyronorm, will launch products in the market with new packages containing barcodes.
